Alabama basketball stars named SEC player, freshman of the week

The Alabama Crimson Tide swept the SEC awards this past week.

Star Alabama guard Labaron Philon Jr. was named as the SEC player of the week, while Amari Allen earned himself SEC freshman of the week honors as well. Both players were nothing short of elite in the Tide's clash with Illinois on Wednesday, as Philon and Allen played a crucial role throughout all 40 minutes of the contest. Philon was credited with 24 points in the victory, and Allen was able to make a massive impact on the glass by hauling in an impressive 11 rebounds over 29 minutes of play.

Philon has been excellent on the offensive end of the court following his struggles against Purdue. The talented sophomore is currently averaging 20.5 points per game along with 5.8 assists this season, and Philon has continued to look like one of the best scoring guards in all of college basketball. The dynamic sharpshooter was a projected first round pick in last year's draft prior to returning to Alabama, and the star continues to turn heads all throughout the college and professional basketball world.

Allen continues to make his presence known on the glass consistently despite coming off the bench for the Tide. The freshman currently averages 7.5 points and 8 rebounds per game, as the star continues to play a key role for head coach Nate Oats and his staff. Allen's SEC freshman of the week honor comes as the first of his young college career, and the freshman will more than likely have plenty of opportunities to continue thriving moving forward.
