Give me a lighthearted recap
After 23 years, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is still celebrated as the entry in the series that paved the way for other great RPGs, especially Oblivion and Skyrim. As players eagerly await the sixth game, one project proves that the older title can still be an impressive landmark. With impressive graphic and visual overhauls, this mod makes Morrowind appear as if it were the hottest release of 2025.
There have been plenty of mods for Morrowind, adding new storylines, improving visuals, and changing aspects of the game's admittedly dated gameplay. However, some fans have gone even further than simply modifying the existing title. According to a video posted by creator Digital Dreams, which you can see below, one project aims to rebuild Morrowind in Unreal Engine 5, gorgeously recreating a classic adventure.
Morrowind Looks Gorgeous In Unreal Engine 5
Incredible Visuals Of Nostalgic Locations Highlight An Ambitious Project
As you can see, the Unreal Engine 5 overhaul of Morrowind improves many visual aspects of the game, while keeping nostalgic elements of its graphics for players to experience. The textures of the terrain are the same, but buildings pop more, with extra details that give them a remastered quality you would expect to come from an official Bethesda remake.
Other Morrowind graphics upgrades can be found extensively through mods, including some that try to emulate other games in the Elder Scrolls series, such as Skyrim's iconic look.
Other effects, like lighting and water reflections, offer the most stunning looks at Morrowind's world, adding far more personality to various locations players will remember. This applies to many different areas of the game too, including the haunting fog details added to some places, implying that this project could include cycles of weather like other modern Elder Scrolls titles.
However, as you might expect, this project comes together strongly on PCs with the best possible hardware. In the video itself, an RTX 5090 graphics card was used to show off Morrowind's Unreal Engine 5 recreation, so players might not have the same visuals on more dated CPUs, GPUs, or processors. Regardless, this project's development is still worth celebrating for fans of Morrowind who've long asked for a remaster.
It'll Keep You Busy Till The Elder Scrolls 6
Playing This Project Will Almost Hint At What's To Come
The Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind with remade graphics in Unreal Engine 5 project
While this project isn't without its flaws, it is great to download and try if you're still frustrated with how long The Elders Scrolls 6 is taking to come out. Recent comments by Bethesda have proven that the next entry in the series is still very early in development, so you'll have to get your fix for the western RPG in what's already come before.
Playing through Morrowind again through this project, or through mods on the original game, are both fun alternatives to thinking about how old you'll be when the sixth game releases. Making a new character in this game can also show you how detailed the RPG systems in Morrowind were, even compared to future Elder Scrolls games, perhaps helping you identify which parts should come back for the anticipated sequel.
Regardless of how you approach this project, it is a testament to how much graphic and visual quality has changed in modern RPGs through Unreal Engine 5. Hopefully, this rework of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind gives Bethesda some good ideas for their continued creation of The Elder Scrolls 6 when it comes to how the game will eventually look.
