Riverdale and The Summer I Turned Pretty stars are uniting for your next romance movie obsession, Chasing Red. Isabelle Ronin's young adult romance became a huge hit on the online platform Wattpad, and now, the film adaptation is moving forward with its two leads cast and production planned for next year.
Per Variety, Riverdale's Madelaine Petsch and The Summer I Turned Pretty's Gavin Casalegno have been cast in the film adaptation of Chasing Red. Lauren Schacher (Hooking Up) is writing the script for director Mackenzie Munro, who previously helmed Wattpad's first independently financed rom-com, Boot Camp, based on the fan-favorite story.
Filming is slated to begin in early 2026 in Saudi Arabia.
Chasing Red centers on straight-A student Veronica (who will be played by Madelaine Petsch), who wants nothing to do with campus charmer Caleb (Gavin Casalegno), even though their unexpected meeting ignites an intense pull between them. Fleeing a difficult past with no safe place to land, Veronica reluctantly moves in with Caleb.
"As their chemistry turns electric and secrets unravel, love and betrayal collide in this addictive, slow-burn romance," the official synopsis reads.

The film is being produced by Greg Silverman of Stampede Ventures and David Madden of Webtoon Productions, while Shane Kelly of Mister Smith Entertainment is overseeing international sales and has secured a slate of deals with Amazon Prime Video in multiple territories. They shared the following statements:
Greg Silverman: Mackenzie brings such an elevated, romantic vision to Isabelle Ronin’s captivating love story that developed an astounding following on Wattpad, and Madelaine and Gavin are the perfect actors to finally bring Veronica and Caleb’s story to audiences around the world.
David Madden: With a passionate fanbase and incredible cast, Chasing Red is one of the hottest packages on the market.
Shane Kelly: With compelling romance, high emotional stakes, and a massive built-in fanbase, this is a surefire opportunity for international buyers looking to tap into the same global audience that propelled franchises like After.
An online platform for sharing original fiction, Wattpad has also published the After romance series, which was adapted into the movies After (2019), After We Collided (2020), After We Fell (2021), After Ever Happy (2022), and After Everything (2023), which made $168 million at the box office worldwide.
Chasing Red is Wattpad's second most-read English title, racking up 261 million reads online. It has since been turned into a popular Webtoon comic with 24 million views, and released both as a print novel from Sourcebooks and a graphic novel from Webtoon Unscrolled.
