Olympique de Marseille director of football Medhi Benatia has revealed that he personally contacted Kevin De Bruyne this summer in an attempt to bring the Manchester City legend to the Vélodrome. Speaking on RMC Afterfoot on Tuesday evening, the Moroccan confirmed that discussions took place while the Belgian was a free agent following the expiry of his contract in England.

Benatia explained that he believed De Bruyne, even at 34, could have been a transformational signing for OM — especially under Roberto De Zerbi. “I spoke with De Bruyne, I wanted to meet him, to discuss with him. He was free. I told myself that with the coach it could really work,” Benatia said. “But he was already too far along with Napoli.”

De Bruyne, who collected 115 caps and 36 goals for Belgium, ended a trophy-laden decade at Manchester City in June, winning six Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups among several honours. Napoli ultimately secured his signature early in the window.

The Belgian started strongly in Italy but suffered a significant injury on 25 October, pulling up as he struck a penalty against Inter Milan. After 11 appearances for Napoli, he is now expected to miss several months.
