There are plenty of wireless carriers to choose from in 2025. So, it only makes sense to explore options if you're looking for something new. However, not all carriers deliver the same service or features, and it can get even more frustrating when you start looking into all the fine details.
With that said, Google Fi was one of the first to support RCS messaging, bringing a more modern way to communicate between Android devices. Unfortunately, it didn't really manage to pull off the move completely, with Google Fi's web interface falling way short of expectations.
A change we've been patiently waiting for
Luckily, that all changes today, with 9to5Google reporting that Google Fi is finally getting its much-anticipated update ahead of the busy holiday season. If you weren't aware, Google Fi has a web portal that allows users to make and take calls, listen to voicemail, and also check messages from a browser.
As you can imagine, this is a huge feature that makes it really convenient to stay in touch, even when your phone is not by your side. However, there was a downside to this, and it was that you couldn't utilize RCS messaging through the web portal, which seems like a huge misstep, especially if you're Google.
With this latest update, you can now access RCS messaging over the web, but it's going to be a breakout solution from the current Google Fi Web interface. What this means is that when you click on the Messages section on the current Google Fi website, it will take you to Google Message for web, which is a completely different website.
As you can imagine, there is a downside to this approach, which requires the users to utilize both websites if you want to call, check voicemails, and message. It's not the most elegant solution, but at least it does provide some way to make it all work. You can give this a try on your own by heading to the Google Fi Web page.
It's not all smooth sailing
RCS messaging didn't have the smoothest rollout, and although it's been a few years now, it still isn't a seamless experience across devices. The problem is that there are just too many variables involved in order to make it work smoothly.
And what makes this even worse is that we're only talking about one region with a handful of carriers. The problems expand even more when you factor in MVNOs and global compatibility.
It'll take time, but eventually at some point, we hope that it's everything it's supposed to be. Of course, if you're not really interested in all of this, you can just continue to use Messages per usual on your Android device.
