Can Zootopia 2 Pass China's Record-Breaking Animated Movie At The Box Office After Massive Opening Weekend?

Zootopia 2 broke box office records in its opening weekend, but it's still far from another record set in 2025 by China's Ne Zha 2. During Thanksgiving weekend in 2024, Disney's Moana 2 had the best global opening for an animated film with $389 million. One year later, the studio beat its own record, as Zootopia 2 earned $559.5 million worldwide.

While the sequel's opening surpassed Moana 2's record, it also passed the global debut of Ne Zha 2, which previously set the record earlier this year with $431.2 million. It's the biggest opening of any movie in 2025, and the fourth best opening ever, behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

It may have beaten Ne Zha 2's opening, but the Chinese film still has the upperhand in total gross. It's the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with $2.2 billion worldwide, according to Forbes, though Box Office Mojo reports its total as $1.9 billion. Either way, it's an astonishing record that may be too hard for Zootopia 2 to beat.

Zootopia 2 Will Make Over $1 Billion, But Won't Catch Ne Zha 2

Any doubts that Zootopia 2 would join the $1 billion club were erased during its opening weekend. It's already more than halfway there and has made more than the original did in its debut, which later went on to make $1.02 billion. The question now becomes how high its total gross will be.

The highest-grossing animated film in Disney's catalog is Pixar's Inside Out 2, which made nearly $1.7 billion at the box office. It was the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was passed this year by Ne Zha 2. Whether the film's gross is $1.9 billion or $2.2 billion, it's still a number that only a few films have reached.

As Zootopia 2 demonstrated in its debut, it has a strong global audience that could give it great legs in its theatrical run. However, Disney's next film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is poised to eat up much of that crowd. Avatar is a global phenomenon, and will likely consume much of the worldwide box office when it debuts on December 19.

Disney won't be upset about the competition between the two films, but it will hurt Zootopia 2's chances at passing Ne Zha 2. Even Fire and Ash may struggle to beat the animated film's global total if it fails to repeat the box office dominance of the first two films.

Zootopia has now established itself as one of the biggest animated franchises of all time and Zootopia 3 is likely on the way after the sequel's incredible performance. While Zootopia 2 may not break Ne Zha 2's record, it will still be considered one of Disney's greatest success stories.
