Getting banned by Steam was a rough fate for the horror game Horses, but it's become clear that the Steam ban was only the start. Ahead of launch, Horses developer Santa Ragione had a spot secured on other PC storefronts, with the game cleared for release on Epic Games, GOG, and the Humble Store. Right before launch, Epic Games pulled its support, narrowing the platforms to GOG and the Humble Store.
Now, Humble has also removed Horses, as reported by IGN. Humble hasn't yet explained the game's delisting, but the removal of Horses from Epic Games did complicate its Humble release, as Santa Ragione was planning to distribute Epic keys through Humble. Nonetheless, Santa Ragione provided Humble with a DRM-free alternative, so distribution shouldn't have been an insurmountable issue.
Horses Has Been Banned From Steam, Epic, & Humble
So far, the cited reasons for the delisting of Horses have varied. Valve denied the game a platform based on an early scene involving a child on the back of a naked adult woman, which Santa Ragione removed before the final build. Epic Games officially approved the game for release, but backtracked 24 hours before launch, citing violations of Epic's "Inappropriate Content" and "Hateful or Abusive Content" policies.
The Epic and Humble removals may not be as irreversible as Steam's ban. Epic's explanation includes a note that an appeal is possible, while it's currently unclear if Humble's removal is permanent. In the meantime, GOG is the only major platform where the game is available. This pillar of distribution is less likely to crumble, as GOG has publicly affirmed its support for Horses.
Horses Bans Spotlight A Bigger Issue
The situation surrounding Horses has quickly turned into a hot-button issue for the entire industry, sparking plenty of conversations about censorship and the nature of artistic expression. Restrictions surrounding sexual content involving minors are certainly reasonable, but after Horses removed the scene that Valve took issue with, the latest Horses bans appear to be more concerned with its generally provocative nature.
Controversy has certainly given Horses a spotlight, and it's off to a fairly strong start. The game has a 77 on Metacritic so far, and it's racked up 68 reviews with a 4.3/5 average on GOG. That's already close to the 80 reviews earned by Santa Ragione's last game, Saturnalia, on Steam.
All the same, Horses may struggle to fully capitalize on the interest, with only GOG left as a major distribution platform. While the book is apparently closed on a Steam release, we could hopefully get some answers about the Humble situation soon.
