Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara is likely to be on the move this offseason, with the Athletics entering the fold as a potential landing spot for the former NL Cy Young Award winner.

Alcantara is coming off a disastrous 2025 season in which he pitched to an 11-12 record with a 5.36 ERA in 31 starts in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, a far fall from grace when he unanimously won the NL Cy Young award in 2022.

Despite not being quite the same, Alcantara is only 30-years-old, and surely has plenty of quality pitching left in the tank. As such, ESPN’s David Schoenfield says that the Marlins should trade Alcantara to the Athletics, noting their lack of quality starting pitching, and the fact that they overpaid to land Luis Severino last winter.

“Alcantara found his groove over his final 12 starts,” Schoenfield said. “Posting a 3.13 ERA with 69 strikeouts versus 18 walks over 77 innings. That is a pitcher you can trade.

“Alcantara is signed to a reasonable $17.3 million for 2026 with a $21 million club option for 2027, which even the A's can afford,” he added.

While he may not be the same, adding Alcantara to the staff would still be an upgrade over what the Athletics currently have. Plus, who knows, maybe Alcantara can tap back into his old All-Star form as his second half of 2025 indicated.
