Beloved video game series Far Cry is back, but not in the way anybody expected. Since its first release in 2004, Far Cry has blended first-person shooter action with the flexibility of sandbox gameplay and, later, open-world exploration.
Now, though, Far Cry has announced its return on X (formerly Twitter) in the most unexpected form: an FX/Hulu original series. First announced this past August, the series is being developed by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob Mac and Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley. It's said to be an "anthology series," presumably with each episode or season focusing on a new setting, and promising plenty of characteristic Far Cry chaos.
Far Cry Is Finally Coming Back, With A Catch
It's Been A While Since The Last Far Cry Game
Far Cry is often considered one of Ubisoft's best series; Far Cry 3, in particular, ranked on Screen Rant's list of the best Ubisoft games of all time. Fans have always appreciated the open-endedness of its action sequences: you can take a stealthy approach, or walk in guns blazing with equal viability.
The series has also spawned some of gaming's most iconic antagonists. With stories that usually revolve around tyrannical rulers in exotic locations, its villains are often as magnetic and fascinating as its heroes - sometimes even more so.
However, it's been a good long while since Far Cry's last video game release. Far Cry 6, which was set on a fictional Caribbean island and starred Giancarlo Esposito as its dictator, came out in 2021 to mixed reviews. That makes a four-year gap since its launch, the longest period of time between any two consecutive entries in the series to date.
Earlier this year, Ubisoft announced the cancellation of the upcoming Far Cry multiplayer spinoff, internally codenamed Blackbird, which likely would've been the series' next release. As far as we know, Project Maverick, Ubisoft's codename for the next mainline Far Cry game, is still in development.
Fans Seem Cautiously Optimistic
"It Can't Be Worse Than The Movie"
But absent an official announcement from Ubisoft on the next game, fans have been longing for some Far Cry news, so even this series is welcome. One user, @PatrixRaider, commented on the X announcement simply to say, "It can't be worse than the movie."
They're referencing the 2008 Far Cry film, a notorious critical and commercial failure. While we don't know much about the upcoming Far Cry series, Noah Hawley's attachment is already promising, and suggests a more thoughtful adaptation of the source material.
Another X user, @BoloTacYT, suggests that the series ended up in the right hands to become a faithful adaptation: "[I'm] so glad FX is doing this because they will understand the source material and bring chaos."
Many fans called for their favorite villains and settings from across the series to appear in the upcoming series, although perhaps none was as popular as Far Cry 3's Vaas. User Tostky put it simply, "I'm going to rate this series entirely on how many Vaas episodes we get."
Again, we know relatively little about the upcoming series at this early stage, but it'll be an exciting, if unexpected, way to return to a world we've been away from for too long. We'll see what the Far Cry series has in store as development proceeds.fghttps:F//x.com/Tostky/status/1993126995056820378?s=20F
