The New York Mets put together a disappointing campaign this season. They whiffed on the postseason despite having a very productive offseason last winter.
They've already gotten aggressive in the free agent market by reportedly agreeing to a deal with former New York Yankees pitcher Devin Williams. Williams is set to slot into the backend of the Mets' bullpen next year and beyond. But they need to add to the starting rotation, too.
Andrew Tredinnick of NorthJersey.com recently predicted the Mets would sign San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King in free agency this winter. King is projected to sign a solid $75 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
..."They found success with another former Yankees relief standout in Clay Holmes. The duo links up again to bolster the top of the team's staff," Tredinnick wrote.
The Mets need to add to their pitching staff as desperately as any portion of the roster. Their pitching rotation was the downfall of the season this year, so the front office needs to prioritize it going forward.
Adding King would be an affordable move for the Mets to make, which would save them enough money to chase a second starting pitcher or a big bat on the free agent market.
But adding King would also move the needle for the Mets. He's been very good when healthy over the last few years. If he can sign a short-term deal with the Mets and stay healthy for the course of it, the righty would help the team a lot.
