The brilliant author behind the novel that inspired Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi epic has spoken out about a controversial reveal in the film’s most recent trailer. Amazon MGM released the second official trailer for Project Hail Mary last week, and it showed the best look yet at Rocky, the alien who Ryland Grace (Gosling) meets in space while on his mission to save the Earth. Project Hail Mary fans were taken aback by this choice, as it seemed like the best call was to hold off on showing the final design until the movie hits theaters next year on March 20.
Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir, who is also famous for penning the legendary sci-fi novel The Martian, recently sat down with Polygon to discuss the choice to reveal Rocky’s full form in the Project Hail Mary trailer. “That was really more of a marketing decision by Amazon MGM,” Weir said, “but the idea was that no one is going to walk into the theater and not know about Rocky.” He also likened the situation to Star Wars, saying, “This is not a Darth Vader is Luke’s father kind of situation. This is a core, central element of the plot that everybody who’s read the book already knows about.”
Fans will continue to debate in the coming months if spoiling Rocky’s final design in the new trailer was the right call, but there’s still plenty to be excited about when Project Hail Mary premieres next year. The space epic is certainly going to be in the running for one of the best sci-fi movies of the year, if not one of the best ever, especially with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Spider-Verse) at the helm.
What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ About?
Project Hail Mary tells the story of Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship, light-years from Earth, with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. The book follows two timelines, one of Ryland Grace recovering his memory in space and one following his journey on Earth that led him to space in the first place. In addition to Ryan Gosling in the feature role of Ryland Grace, Project Hail Mary also stars Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us), and Liz Kingsman (F1: The Movie).
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Project Hail Mary ahead of the film’s March 20, 2026, release.
