HASLETT — Travis Satterla would love to help the Haslett boys basketball team be successful again this season after playing a role in the program capturing a district championship last winter.

And as one of the key returners on the Viking roster, Satterla will be one of the factors on the court this season for the Vikings.

The senior forward showed his impact ability Tuesday, Dec. 2 while helping Haslett open its season with a 68-44 victory over Ionia.

Satterla finished with a game-high 22 points while playing a part in the victory, scoring 17 points in the second half.

"It was a team effort," Satterla said. 'My teammates got me open and passed me the ball so that was good. We just shared the ball well, scored and rebounded and just outworked them."

Satterla's big second half contributed to Haslett pulling away from Ionia after leading 26-21 at halftime. He contributed to an 11-0 run to start the third quarter that helped the Vikings gain separation.

"I thought it was the way he was attacking the rim and finishing at the bucket," Haslett coach Chris Smith said of Satterla's big second half. "He has the ability to get to a point where he's finishing above pretty much most people in the area. When he gets going downhill and when he gets that high, he's tough to deal with and tough to stop."

Satterla was one of three players to score in double figures for Haslett in its opening win. Junior forward Brogan Ide had 16 points and senior guard Wardrell Wicker added 14 points. All three are among the top returners back from a squad that won 20 games last winter.

Smith believes Haslett can do some big things this season with that trio leading the way and with the other talent surrounding them.

"We do have some young, talented pieces and not all of them are in the lineup yet," Smith said. "Some of them are still hurt. If (our veterans) can bring those guys along and kind of show them where we left off last year, I think we've got a pretty high ceiling this year."

Ethan Wenzel finished with nine points to lead Ionia.
