GTA 6 Price Controversy: $100 Tag Debated Amid Delays & Speculation

There’s a huge controversy about how much GTA 6 could cost, and some users are defending a potential $100 price tag, while others reject it.

Even though Rockstar Games hasn’t announced the official price for Grand Theft Auto 6, there’s already a huge controversy swirling around the idea that it could cost more than your average AAA title, and once again, that has become a huge topic of discussion. Originally planned to release in May 2026, GTA 6 has been delayed to November 2026 to give the team more time to polish it.

Given the anticipated scope of the project, there are rumors that GTA 6 could cost $100, and those rumors have been addressed by Jay Klaitz, the actor behind Lester from GTA 5. In an interview with The Escapist, Klaitz was asked if the upcoming title deserved to be the first $100 game, to which he responded: “Yeah, dude. I mean, GTA V was so heavy on the mocap. I assume that GTA VI will be the same way, and these games take so long to make. Years and years and years.”

Some Are Willing To Pay An Expensive Price For The Upcoming Game

Klaitz’s opinion on the matter sparked controversy, as a post by user Fun_Philosopher_2535 on Reddit highlighted the actor’s defense of the rumored pricing. They question why the actor would want to see a game to be as expensive as $100 when they haven’t seen the final product. “If the game is truly good and deserves it, the hard work will pay off through sales. Just like GTA 5 sold 200 million copies and RDR2 sold 80 million,” they say.

The rumors about GTA 6’s $100 price were previously addressed by Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick. During an interview with Variety, he said that “our goal always is to deliver more value than what we charge, so we’ve had variable pricing at the company forever.” This quote doesn’t clarify if the game will cost what the rumors indicate, but leaves it open to that very possibility.

The idea of the $100 price tag is terrifying to players, according to a study about GTA 6’s potential price. In comments in the Reddit post, users mention that they believe the game won’t cost over $70, the current standard for AAA titles. User acexualien95, for instance, mentions that “I strongly believe it should not exceed 70$. They will generate billions from it for the next decade... stop allowing them to increase game prices.”

This, however, is not the consensus. In a similar post highlighting the interview by Twitter user GTA 6 Countdown, users reply saying they are willing to pay $100 for GTA 6. User El Gato Cojo, for instance, says that Mario Kart World’s increased price tag of $80 justifies GTA 6 costing at least $120. User Pengu even mentions they’d pay $500 for the upcoming game.

GTA 6 Could Cost More Than The Standard Price

The fact is that GTA 6’s price is still a mystery, and we’ll only know for certain how much it’ll cost once Take-Two makes an official announcement. There is a chance that the game could be more expensive than the standard $70 for AAA titles nowadays, but not necessarily $100. Like Mario Kart World, it could be priced at $80, for example. It could also cost $100 at release, though Rockstar does have a history of offering good deals for its titles years and years after its release.

If the next entry in the series has a similar performance as GTA 5, there may be no reason for Rockstar to increase the price tag, as players will purchase the upcoming title multiple times over the years, possibly spanning over two generations of consoles. It’s unclear what direction GTA 6 will take, but it’s already building up to be an industry-changing release in 2026, regardless of its price tag.
