In the New York Giants' 37-24 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, quarterback Jameis Winston achieved several rare feats.
The 10-year veteran, playing in place of injured starter Jaxson Dart (concussion), threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns and added a 33-yard touchdown reception in the game.

Winston’s 33-yard touchdown reception is the third-longest touchdown reception by a starting quarterback in the Super Bowl era, trailing only Marcus Mariota (41-yard touchdown reception on Dec. 13, 2015 with Tennessee) and Tyler Thigpen (37-yard touchdown reception on Nov. 2, 2008 with Kansas City).
Winston is the second player ever with at least 300 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and a touchdown reception in a single game, joining Matt Ryan (Dec. 30, 2018, with Atlanta).
The Giants reported that it was Winston's first career reception and marked the first touchdown pass caught by a Giants quarterback since at least 1940.
For his performance, Winston was named a nominee for one of this week’sFedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Award after completing 18 of 36 attempts (50.0 percent) for 366 yards and two touchdowns with a 93.1 QB rating, along with the touchdown reception.
In addition to the touchdown reception, which was thrown by backup wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (his first NFL pass), Winston was also involved in a flea-flicker, hitting wideout Wan'Dale Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown to open the scoring.

"I like to consider myself an athlete," Winston said after the game. "I believe that I can make plays like that for this team. If I need to play tight end, I can. I do whatever it is that’s required for this team to have success. I’m grateful that (Giants Head Coach Mike) Kaf (Kafka) gave me an opportunity and Gunner trusted me to -- he gave me a chance. Sometimes that’s all you got to do at the quarterback position, get your guy a chance."
What's more to this story is that this could be Winston's last start for the Giants, for the foreseeable future, anyway.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDart is still in the concussion protocol, and the Giants will seek to give him more experience as the season draws to a close. It's a shame, because Winston makes things happen for better and worse. He's never a boring watch.
