Riley Derstine scored a career-high 21 points as Kutztown opened its high school girls basketball season with a 44-43 victory over Shenandoah Valley on Monday.
Derstine, a junior guard, scored nine points in the first quarter as the Cougars led 14-13 heading into the second quarter.

Kaitlyn Houptley, a junior, added 10 points for the Cougars, including a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, their only points during that frame.
