San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln defensive back Cammeron Purnell has backed off his commitment to Oregon State and is now focusing on three schools leading up to Signing Day.

Purnell committed to Oregon State back in June but opened up his recruitment earlier today.

“I’m looking at Arizona State, Cal and San Diego State,” Purnell said. “I was supposed to take my official visit to Cal this past weekend but we had our Championship game and I wasn’t able to make it out.

“I did visit Cal for Junior Day and have a good feel for the school. I wasn’t able to officially visit ASU either but I was there in the summer for a 7v7 event and really liked it. They offered me late in the process and that was a huge blessing for me.”

Purnell did take an official trip to San Diego State and has been on campus multiple times.

“I took my official visit in June and I have a strong comfort level there,” Purnell said. “I’ve been there a lot and being the local school for me, I know the coaches really well.

“The plan right now for me is to take the next few days to think this over and then announce and sign on Wednesday. The biggest thing for me is finding a place where I can play and get on the field early and a school taht feels like home for my family and I.”

Purnell is a talented defensive back who made the move from corner to safety this season and his game took off.

He plays for one of the state’s power programs at Lincoln and finished the year with 82 tackles, five for loss and three interceptions. He’s one of the more physical safeties in the region, loves to hit and shows plenty of range as well.
