Power: Origins will make franchise history with a supersized episode count. The upcoming spinoff in Starz's Power franchise is a prequel featuring Spence Moore as young James "Ghost" St. Patrick and Charlie Mann as a young Tommy Egan. Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora previously played the respective roles of Ghost and Tommy.
Unlike the former spinoffs, which have had ten episodes each, Power: Origins will have 18 episodes in season 1. The announcement comes as the show adds six recurring stars to the cast and with filming taking place in New Jersey.
The new cast members are Jason Dirden (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) as Traymond Stinson, Jennifer Ferrin (The Blacklist) as Tommy's mother Kate Egan, Lizzy DeClement (New Amsterdam) as nurse Jill Wexler, Lenny Platt (The Hot Zone) as finance bro Lenny Seidel, Armani Gabriel (Blue Bloods) as foot soldier J-Boogs, and Everett Osborne (Sweetwater) as professional football player Omay Moreau.
With Raising Kanan being another Power show, Dirden is reprising the role of Traymont from that series. Traymont betrayed the Thomas family after previously being one of their trusted associates. Mekai Curtis was previously confirmed to be returning to play young Kanan in Origins. The adult Kanan was originally portrayed by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.
In addition to the extended episode count, Origins is expected to be somewhat different from its predecessors in terms of tone. Starz has described the series as “a fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the Power franchise” that will explore "the unbridled audacity of young men on the rise, determined to become legends in the game.”
The original Power series, starring Hardwick as Ghost and Sikora as Tommy, debuted in 2014. The crime drama aired for six seasons and launched a universe that went on to include Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force.
Power and its various spinoffs have long been considered to be among the best Starz shows. Giving Origins almost double the number of episodes that Ghost, Raising Kanan, and Force had is a promising sign that Starz has tremendous confidence in the upcoming prequel.
Many shows, even long-running procedurals on network television, are seeing increasingly shorter episode counts per season now. Origins appears to be an exception to what feels like a rule in modern television, with a season only a few episodes shy of what was once considered standard.
While Powers: Origins films its 18-episode first season, development continues on another spinoff, Power: Legacy. Instead of being a prequel, it will take place in the franchise's present-day timeline after the events of Force, with Hardwick and Sikora playing Ghost and Tommy again.
