Over the last few weeks, Texas Longhorns football has been busy building for the future. That includes landing some of the top prospects in the 2026 and 2027 classes. While their focus has been on the next two years, they have not ignored players in the 2028 class. On Sunday, they received encouraging news about one of their top targets, Shamar Evans.

The four-star recruit revealed his top six programs at the moment and included the Longhorns. Their competition includes Baylor, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, and Jackson State. While Texas will have to beat out some of its SEC rivals, it is an encouraging sign that Steve Sarkisian and his staff have already caught Evans' attention.

Although Evans is not ranked, his play has not gone unnoticed. He has shown a talent for frustrating offensive coordinators, which would transfer well to the SEC. For programs looking for impact players on defense, Evans has shown the potential to be that type of player.

Currently, the Longhorns do not have a commitment from a player in the 2028 class, but they have been building connections with some of the top players available. They have extended offers to Neimann Lawrence, Micah Rhodes, Brysen Wright, and Ridge Janes. That list should continue to grow in the coming months.

With no commitment date set, the Longhorns have plenty of time to make Evans an offer he can't refuse. Their next goal will be to get him to campus for a visit so that he can get a preview of what his future as a Longhorn could hold. Over the next few months, Texas will be a program to watch as they look to build on their success so far with Evans.
