Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson says the club’s long-awaited stadium project remains “unbelievably complex”, reiterating that no final decision has yet been made on whether to renovate St James’ Park or pursue a completely new build.

Speaking at the We Are United engagement event and reported by Sky Sports, Hopkinson underlined the scale of the challenge facing the club as it looks to expand its revenue streams and keep pace with the Premier League’s elite. A feasibility study into increasing the current 52,000 capacity was completed earlier this year, but several options remain on the table.

“What is clear is that, to be at the top consistently, we need to grow revenues,” Hopkinson said. “St James’ Park today is incredible, but we need to look at other opportunities, whether renovated or reimagined. We have not made that decision. We are working on it every day.”

While the prospect of a new stadium has not been dismissed, Hopkinson stressed that supporters should not expect swift progress, given the logistical and planning obstacles involved.

“I know there is pressure: ‘when, when, when?’,” he added. “It won’t be today, and it may not be tomorrow. This is a complex project, the biggest the club will ever undertake. To get ahead of ourselves would be counter-productive.”

The club is expected to continue consultations into 2026, with fan groups calling for the historic stadium to remain central to any future plans.
