It feels unfair to expect much more of Stardew Valley at this point, doesn't it? Over the last nine years we've had dozens of updates and tons of brand-new content, all of it completely free.
Incredibly, creator Eric Barone isn't actually finished yet. Despite working on Stardew Valley's sort-of sequel The Haunted Chocolatier, there's one last big surprise for Stardew Valley gamers; scheduled to arrive before the end of 2025.
Stardew Valley Is Getting One Last 2025 Update
And it's a big one
Back in September, it was announced that Stardew Valley would be getting an upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2. Better yet, unlike most Switch 2 upgrades, this one will be completely free. Eric Barone is what I believe the kids call a "real one".
The Switch 2 edition of Stardew Valley comes packed with new features, such as:
- Four-player local split screen co-op.
- The introduction of mouse controls (a lovely surprise).
- Game Share functionality, allowing friends or family who don't own Stardew Valley to play along.
Those are the big features, but there's every chance a few more surprises have been snuck in that we can discover once the update is released. If nothing else, it's an excuse to go and sink another few hundred hours into Stardew Valley during the cold winter months. There's just one small catch.
Stardew Valley's Switch 2 Upgrade Has Yet To Appear
We just have to be patient
During the September Nintendo Direct, the Switch 2 upgrade for Stardew Valley was listed as releasing "Fall 2025." Naturally, some fans are now getting a little antsy, and have assumed the lack of any news on the update could mean it's been delayed to 2026.
There's no need to panic just yet, though. While I'm sure most of us kind of assume Winter rolls around as soon as December makes its appearance, Winter 2025 doesn't actually kick off properly until December 21. That means we have a few weeks yet where the update could materialize. It'd certainly be a nice little Christmas surprise, wouldn't it?
Stardew Valley Nintendo Switch 2 Edition could be right around the corner, then, allowing us to end 2025 on a particularly cozy note. Not that 2026 looks any less cozy, mind you, with both Animal Crossing New Horizons 3.0 and Pokémon Pokopia launching in the first few months of the year.
