It’s been a few years since the highest-grossing WWII movie of all time first hit theaters, but it’s still making waves on streaming as more continue to discover it for the first time. In 2023, Christopher Nolan released what many consider his magnum opus, Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office before sweeping the 2025 Academy Awards. Oppenheimer has bounced around on various streaming services like Peacock and Prime Video since its release more than two years ago. However, globally, the film is still a massive success, spiking on VOD on Apple TV and Google in more than 15 countries around the world, as of December 2025.

Oppenheimer is one of the highest-rated films of the last 10 years, from both critics and audiences. It earned scores of 93% from the former and 91% from the latter on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $975 million at the global box office. With a few re-releases over the years, it may yet become the only WWII movie to gross $1 billion worldwide. The film stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., who both won Oscars for their performances. Emily Blunt, Josh Hartnett, Matt Damon, and Jason Clarke also star. Oppenheimer is only available on VOD in America at the time of writing.

Oppenheimer is the latest movie from the mind of Christopher Nolan, and it was his first since the divisive 2020 sci-fi mind-bender, Tenet. He shifts genres once again for his next release, The Odyssey, which will be a historical epic led by Oppenheimer’s Matt Damon. Currently primed for release on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey is expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. It also stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and many more.

James Cameron Once Criticized 'Oppenheimer'

Earlier this year, James Cameron said during an interview that he believed Oppenheimer dodged the core subject of the story, which is the actual bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. While he praised the technical filmmaking of Christopher Nolan, he admitted that he would have handled the story differently, which is what he’ll have the chance to do in his own WWII movie, currently titled Ghosts of Hiroshima. Cameron still has plenty of work to do on the Avatar franchise, though, before he begins work on his WWII movie, which presumably won’t be released for at least another 10 years while he finishes Avatar 4 and 5.

Check out Oppenheimer on VOD platforms like Prime Video in America and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
