The reviews for Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme are in. Starring two-time Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme is loosely inspired by the career of real-life table tennis player Marty Reisman, reimagined as Marty Mauser. First reactions to Marty Supreme were overwhelmingly positive, positioning it as a major awards contender, now backed up by full reviews.
Backed by A24, Marty Supreme also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, and Tyler, the Creator, and is slated for theatrical release on December 25. The movie is co-written by Ronald Bronstein, who also wrote Uncut Gems with Josh Safdie and his brother Benny, and is emerging as a career-defining feat for Chalamet.
That is, Marty Supreme has debuted with a critical score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it currently one of the highest-rated movies of Chalamet's career. It is the highest-rated movie that one could say belongs to the actor, as the only one to outrank it is Greta Gerwig's feature Lady Bird, in which Chalamet has a small supporting role.
This score essentially confirms the categories that many experts have guessed Marty Supreme will make it into among the 2026 Oscar nominees. It is an almost guaranteed Best Picture nominee at this point, as well as Best Original Screenplay, a strong contender for Best Director and some craft and tech categories. And Best Actor is seemingly Chalamet's race to lose.
According to reviews, Marty Supreme's shares Uncut Gems' chaotic tone, but shines as an unconventional sports movie about the lead's hubris. ScreenRant's own Todd Gilchrist, reviewing Marty Supreme, says that the filmmakers "transform" the real story "into a 1980s sports movie by way of meticulously recreated 1950s Brooklyn by way of the Greek fable of Icarus."
Marty Supreme still has yet to tackle the box office, and will be sharing its release date with The Testament of Ann Lee and a limited release of No Other Choice. The latter might be more of a sleeper success because it won't be immediately widely available, but the other two could be competing for the title of the last big box office hit of this awards season.
However, reviews generally indicate that Marty Supreme is the stronger movie which has many elements that will appeal to general audiences. This solo Safdie venture doesn't look like it will win over One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet, but it is shaping up to be something massive and special, and could finally win Chalamet the coveted award.
