By Maria Azzurra VolpeShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberIn a heartwarming TikTok video, a dog owner from Chicago shared their vizsla’s reaction to meeting his new brother for the first time, and internet users can’t cope with how cute the footage is.
The now-viral clip, shared on Wednesday by @moose.mager, shows the poster holding the little puppy, a German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), up in the air as they walk into their older dog’s crate to introduce them face to face.
While the poster keeps the puppy up for safety, their dog is nothing but excited to meet his new brother, and wants nothing more but to be able to play with him already.
He follows the puppy around, wags his tail enthusiastically, and sniffs him from afar, until his owner allows them to be a little closer under strict supervision.
...“The day I met my best friend for life. Welcome to the family, Moose,” the caption reads.
Introducing a new puppy to your existing dog requires preparation and careful supervision. To start with, you should provide separate beds and water bowls so each dog has its own space, especially during the early adjustment period.
It is also important, according to animal charity Blue Cross, that you remove toys and food before the first meeting to prevent competition, and ensure your adult dog is fully vaccinated, as puppies are vulnerable to infection.
Arrange the initial introduction outdoors in a low-traffic area, keeping both dogs on lead while allowing them to sniff and explore. If either becomes anxious or overly excited, take short breaks and continue walking before reintroducing them.
Bring them into the home together and keep house lines on so you can separate them easily. Use baby gates to create safe boundaries when needed, and monitor interactions closely.
Puppies may pester adult dogs, so intervene if play becomes too intense. Continue supervising until both dogs are consistently comfortable with each other at all times daily.
