The Boston Red Sox finished third in the American League East last season. As a result, they came into the offseason needing to make some major moves if they wanted to close the gap on the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
To start the offseason, the Red Sox added Sonny Gray in a shocking trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. Gray is going to slot in as the No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher in Boston, but the front office needs to keep adding on.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently reported the Red Sox were targeting free agent slugger Pete Alonso of the New York Mets in free agency.
..."The Red Sox are considering signing up to two of these five big-time lineup enhancements: uberpopular Kyle Schwarber, plus Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto and J.T. Realmuto, as well as last winter’s big pickup Alex Bregman," Heyman wrote Thursday.
Alonso would be a huge addition to the Red Sox's lineup. He would take over at first base for the time being before being moved to the designated hitter role in the coming years.
The Red Sox could also afford Alonso after the Gray trade, even if it would come at a huge cost. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently projected Alonso would sign for $182 million in free agency.
The Red Sox need to make big moves to close the gap in the AL East. Adding Alonso would certainly help them push for a division title in the coming years.
