Drivers in North Carolina have been urged to use caution by police after multiple “tire puncture devices” were discovered in a Macon County roadway.

Why It Matters

Officials warned that the devices present a “significant risk” to motorists, and that the incident was being taken “very seriously.”

What To Know

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office disclosed the incident in a social media update posted Saturday. In that post, the agency said deputies were actively investigating and were working to determine the identity of the person or people responsible.

The Sheriff’s Office did not specify how long the devices may have been on the road, how many were located, or how many vehicles have been damaged, but emphasized that an inquiry was underway.

The Macon County Sheriff's Office did however release images of the devices, which appeared metallic and arrow head-shaped. Police also published an image of one of the devices lodged in a car tire.

The Sheriff’s Office also said the North Carolina Department of Transportation had been informed and was working to remove the devices in question and make sure the roadway remains safe for drivers.
