It’s official. The OnePlus 15R will be the first phone to use Qualcomm’s newest 8-series processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. In addition to revealing this, the company has also shared other news about its incoming range of new mobile devices.

OnePlus 15R’s new chip

I’ll let you read that again. The OnePlus 15R will be the first phone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, and to make sure your brain doesn’t accidentally fill in a blank that's not there, note it's not the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the OnePlus 15.

The non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 was teased earlier this year, and then fully unveiled on November 26, ready for OnePlus’s announcement a few days later. The chip differs in specs to the Elite version.

Notably, its two prime Oryon CPU cores run at up to 3.8GHz compared to the Elite’s 4.6GHz, and it’s six performance cores run at 3.32GHz rather than the 3.62GHz in the Elite. It supports LP-DDR5x RAM, but at speeds up to 4,800Mhz and not 5,300Mhz like the Elite version, and appears to have an identical Adreno GPU. The Elite’s Snapdragon X85 5G modem has been swapped out for a Snapdragon X80 5G modem too.

While some may think this is a serious downgrade from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the OnePlus 15, Realme GT 8 Pro, and the Poco F8 Ultra, the reduction in overall power may help keep device temperatures under control, which has been an issue for all phones we’ve tested with the chip so far.

In addition to the new processor, OnePlus says the OnePlus 15R will use the DetailMax Engine for the camera, a G2 Wi-Fi chip, and a 1.5K AMOLED touchscreen with a 144Hz refresh rate. The screen is likely to be the similar to the screen on the OnePlus Nord 5, and not the OnePlus 15.

OnePlus has not talked about the battery inside the OnePlus 15R, so it’s still unknown if it’ll be the massive 8,300mAh cell expected in the China-only OnePlus Ace 6T.

OnePlus Watch Lite

The OnePlus Watch Lite is another of the three products OnePlus will launch on December 17, and we’ve got a lot more details about it. It seems the smartwatch will only come in a single case size with a 1.46-inch AMOLED screen, which will be capable of a maximum 3,000 nits brightness.

The case will be made from stainless steel and measure 8.9mm thick, making it much thinner than the 11.7mm thick OnePlus Watch 3, and about 15 grams lighter at 35 grams without the strap. It will come in one color, Phantom Black.

It does not seem like the smartwatch will run Google’s Wear OS software, as it’s stated it will support both Android and iOS operating systems. Interestingly, you will be able to link the Watch Lite to two different phones at the same time, and they don’t have to run the same OS either.

On the fitness side, it will have dual-band GPS, 100 sport modes to track, and a 60-second Wellness Overview health feature, which checks different data points in the allotted time to give a quick indicator of your health.

OnePlus Pad Go 2

OnePlus has also shared a little about its next tablet, the OnePlus Pad Go 2. It will have a massive 12.1-inch screen with a 2.8K resolution, giving it a pixel density of 285 pixels-per-inch (ppi).

The software will include OnePlus’s Open Canvas multi-tasking feature, seen on the OnePlus Pad 3 and the OnePlus Open folding smartphone.

The OnePlus Pad Go 2, the OnePlus Watch Lite, and the OnePlus 15R will all officially launch on December 17, but expect the company to drip-feed out more specs and details before then. The OnePlus 15R and the OnePlus Pad Go 2 will be released in the U.S..
