Liverpool were finally able to break the surface and come up for air with a much needed victory at West Ham on Sunday. Not only did they secure all three points, struggling striker Alexander Isak finally opened his Liverpool account by scoring at the hour mark to put the Reds officially in the lead.

“I’m aware that it’s been a long time coming,” Isak told Sky Sports post-match.

“I’ve been trying to get back to my best form and I’m still on the way. But I’m happy to have that goal.

“It’s a mix [of feelings], of course. The most important [and] best feeling today is that we won the game, that’s the best way to get a good spirit within the group, and that’s helpful for the individual as well.

“But, of course I’m a striker, so scoring goals will always help me.”

Isak joined the Reds on deadline day and hasn’t exactly had an easy journey to this moment. From not training with a club all summer, missing pre-season, and then not being entirely match fit, the striker has looked almost bereft whenever he has been able to make it to the pitch. There is very little time to rest and reflect on that, though, as we enter the busy December period of matches with Sunderland on Wednesday and Leeds the following weekend.

“I think we have to use this win in a good way,” continued Isak.

“But also be humble, because we’ve had a tough time. One win doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re back, we have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum.”

Hopefully the result showed coach Arne Slot more positives than negatives with the changes he had made to get to that point, including Joe Gomez featuring in the right back role, and the whole squad are able to keep these positives rolling into Wednesday.
