Ventura County will send three football teams to CIF-State competition for the first time this weekend.
Recently crowned CIF-Southern Section champions, Pacifica, Ventura and Grace are three of the 56 teams from around the state in 14 divisions who have advanced to this weekend’s CIF-State regionals.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe only previous season in which the county produced three sectional football champions was 1999, which was before CIF-State football competition launched in 2006.
Pacifica (14-0) will visit Granite Hills (10-3) in the CIF-State Division 1-A regional on Saturday night.
The Tritons won their second straight CIF-SS championship and third in six seasons Friday, edging host Palos Verdes 20-10 for the Division 3 championship.
Granite Hills defeated San Diego-Lincoln 41-29 to win the San Diego Section’s Division 1 title last Saturday.
The game will be televised on Spectrum News and Spectrum SportsNet.
Ventura (11-2) will travel to Arroyo Grande (9-4) in the CIF-State Division 3-AA regional on Friday night.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Cougars routed host St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy 63-28 Saturday night to earn the CIF-SS Division 6 championship. It is Ventura’s first section title since the Cougars beat Arroyo Grande 35-14 to win the 2000 Division IV title.
Grace (11-3) will host San Diego-Morse (9-4) in the CIF-State Division 6-A regional on Saturday at Moorpark College’s Griffin Stadium.
The Lancers earned their fifth section title by topping Santa Paula 48-16 in the CIF-SS Division 12 title game on Friday at Cal Lutheran University’s Rolland Stadium.
Morse beat San Diego-Hoover 45-30 on Friday to win the San Diego Section Division 5 title.
