Although Sir Patrick Stewart is known for his heroic on-screen efforts as the ever-diplomatic Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek universe or Professor Charles Xavier in the 20th Century Fox Marvel universe, there's at least one occasion in film where he's been utterly reprehensible — 2015's Green Room. In a rare villainous turn for the beloved actor, he plays the intimidating neo-Nazi skinhead leader Darcy Banker in the brutal horror flick, commanding his fellow white supremacists with authority and making life a living hell for an unfortunate band playing at his bar. His performance, along with the grounded, gritty violence and a strong cast around him, helped power the film to a Certified Fresh 90% Rotten Tomatoes score despite a lackluster $3.8 million box office performance. Now, starting December 1, this modern cult classic can be streamed for free on Tubi.

Green Room centers on a punk rock band called the Ain't Rights, who, after their latest gig gets cancelled, land a show at Banker's skinhead bar in the woods outside of Portland. Everything quickly goes wrong when they inadvertently discover a dead woman in the green room and try to call the police. To protect his business and ensure there are no witnesses to the crimes at hand, Banker orders his men to kill the Ain't Rights. The band is left cornered in a desperate fight for survival, seeking any way out from a bar that's crawling with white supremacists who can't be reasoned with.

At the helm of Green Room was writer-director Jeremy Saulnier, who would go on to direct Netflix's Emmy-winning, Aaron Pierre-led smash hit Rebel Ridge last year. The horror flick was also produced by A24, marking an earlier example of the indie banner's horror excellence, releasing in theaters the same year as Robert Eggers' The Witch. Joining Stewart in the bloody and brutal nightmare were Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner as the members of Ain't Right, with Imogen Poots playing the murder victim's friend. Their work earned praise from the moment the film premiered at Cannes in 2015, and it would continue to earn accolades throughout the festival circuit, including the Audience Award at Fantastic Fest.

Patrick Stewart Is About to Suit Up for One of His Most Iconic Roles

Stewart has a big year coming up in 2026, starting with The Sheep Detectives. The mystery comedy will reunite him with his X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman, who plays a shepherd found dead under mysterious circumstances, while Stewart voices one of the sheep who put their minds together to solve it. They're just two pieces of a star-studded cast that also includes Emma Thompson, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, Molly Gordon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nicholas Galitzine, and more.

However, most of the attention is on Stewart's return to the world of Marvel after getting a chair for Avengers: Doomsday earlier this year. Stewart and his fellow X-Men alumni — including Sir Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden — are all set to reprise their roles and join the fight against Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom in the MCU's next big team-up film, set to hit theaters on December 19, 2026. His next stint as Charles Xavier will reclaim him the title of longest-serving Marvel character actor from Jackman, though the exact details of his comeback remain a closely-guarded secret.

Green Room will be available for free on Tubi starting December 1. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on all the biggest titles hitting streaming services throughout the year.
