Bayern Munich fans might have recently noticed that the Bayern Munich bench needs staffing. Per 11Freunde via @iMiaSanMia, Eberl was asked “Thomas Müller would have extended his contract with FC Bayern even for a small salary. Why did the club decide against that?” You would perhaps expect a clear answer now that Müller is no longer part of the squad at Bayern. Yet, the answer might seem underwhelming.
Eberl mentioned: “To be honest, we didn’t talk to Thomas about money at all; it was much more about the squad.” That might be difficult to believe for some due to how thin this squad is. Eberl continued with empty platitudes: “Everyone would have liked to keep him at FC Bayern as a person; he’s one of the greatest players ever to wear the jersey of this club.” The conclusion the club drew from this was: “Therefore, it wouldn’t have done him justice to give him any role.”

It was a tough decision, a tough conversation, but we parted on good terms, and he even played in the Club World Cup to round off his time with us.”
Perhaps Müller might come back to the club in a supervisory position. But, sadly, his playing days at Bayern are over.
