In a year packed with new offerings for Stephen King fans, the thriller series Mr. Mercedes came as a bit of a surprise. The show debuted on Netflix recently, and immediately broke into the streamer's global viewership charts. Mr. Mercedes premiered to positive reviews in 2017, and ran for three seasons until 2019. But it was neither canceled nor renewed, but simply left hanging. The show made the Peacock streaming service its home for several years before landing on Netflix, where an entirely new audience seems to have discovered it. Starring Brendan Gleeson as an emotionally scarred detective who's hounded by a mass murderer, Mr. Mercedes was among the 10 most-watched shows on the global Netflix charts earlier this week.

The show was created by the very prolific David E. Kelley, and was based on the King novels Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and End of Watch. It could conceivably have broken out and become the next Bosch, but it always struggled to do so despite positive reviews. Mr. Mercedes is now resting at a "certified fresh" 91% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the second season peaking at 100%. Kelley remains as prolific as ever, having recently delivered the Apple TV hit Presumed Innocent. Also responsible for Big Little Lies, he originally made a name for himself with the hit shows Doogie Howser, MD, Ally McBeal, and Chicago Hope.

Stephen King Fans Have Had a Feast This Year

Also featuring Harry Treadaway, Justine Lupe, Jharrel Jerome, Holland Taylor, and Mary-Louise Parker, Mr. Mercedes originally aired on the now-defunct Audience Network. Collider's review at the time praised Gleeson's central performance, but noted that the "pacing likely won't do the series any favors with the weekly crowd." Mr. Mercedes' success comes in the same week as the release of Edgar Wright's The Running Man, the latest King adaptation to debut theatrically this year. Movies such as The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, and The Long Walk have already come and gone, with shows The Institute and It: Welcome to Derry keeping King fans entertained at home. They can now look forward to a special IMAX re-release of The Shining.

Mr. Mercedes is available now on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
