The Chicago Bears continue to be one of the biggest surprises in the NFL.

The team is red-hot, winning their last five games and making a statement the day after Thanksgiving with its 24-15 Week 13 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Black Friday.

And while the Bears had plenty of reason to celebrate over the weekend, one of the team’s players is likely bracing to hear from the NFL for a play that is expected to lead to a fine.

Third-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Jr. is one of Chicago’s top pass-rushers (he’s second on the team behind Josh Sweat with four sacks), and he sometimes can get carried away in his aggressive pursuit of the QB.

That’s exactly what happened early in the third quarter after Dexter laid a hard hit on Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts long after he threw the ball.

Dexter was called for a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty that kept Philadelphia’s drive alive and ultimately led to a 33-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to A.J. Brown that pulled the Eagles to within 10-9.

Video replay shows just how egregious Dexter’s hit was. A slowed-down clip of the play shows Dexter taking a full four steps in the time between Hurts throwing the ball and getting shoulder-charged by Dexter.

Given the number of players who have been fined by the NFL this season or similar plays — and Hurts’ profile as one of the top QBs in the league — Dexter likely has a pretty significant fine coming his way.

Per the NFL rule book, late hits on quarterbacks typically cost players $17,389 for first offenses and $23,186 for second offenses.
