The Pinnacle SkyTower, which is set to be Canada’s tallest residential building, has hit a historic milestone before its completion as it now becomes the country’s first building to have 100 storeys.

Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, upon completion, the building will span 106 storeys, reaching a height of around 1,154 feet, becoming one of the country’s first supertall buildings. Supertall skyscrapers are buildings that stand around 984 feet or higher, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

Aiming to "evoke the form of a 12-sided jewel,” the Pinnacle SkyTower features a glazed, tapered form with vertical fins that accentuate its height and a “flying buttress” detail that connects the tower with its podium base, which is articulated with horizontal banding, the architectural firm behind it describes on its website.

“The podium was widened to accommodate the extended structural walls needed to achieve the slenderness ratio for a tower of this height,” the firm added. “At street level, a continuous glass canopy wraps the podium, providing shelter from the elements and creating a welcoming, scaled space for residents and guests.”

Developed by Pinnacle International, the building forms part of the Pinnacle One Yonge development in Toronto's Central Waterfront. The building will house over 950 residential units, featuring a pool, yoga studio, fitness center, and an entertainment space. Its lower twelve floors will house the Le Méridien, a 220-room hotel.

Once built, the Pinnacle SkyTower will usurp One Bloor West, Canada’s first-ever supertall building, which reached its 984-foot mark in July.

Designed by designed by Foster + Partners, the architectural firm founded by British architect Norman Foster, One Bloor West will stand at around 1,012 feet—or 85 stories—after its construction is complete.

The milestone reached by Canada's One Bloor West comes about a year after developers received the green light to proceed with the construction of the tallest building in North America—the Legends Tower—which will be built in Oklahoma City.

With a planned height of 1,907 feet, once completed, the Legends Tower will surpass the 1,776-foot tall One World Trade Center in New York City by 131 feet, and become the sixth-tallest building in the world. Construction is set to begin in 2026 and projected to be finished by 2030.
