While Yellowstone fans eagerly await a slew of promised spinoffs, they can get their Western fix with a soon-to-be-released Netflix series, The Abandons. The new show comes just shy of a year after Yellowstone aired its controversial series finale. The show's ending was widely considered a disappointment as Yellowstone arguably tarnished its own legacy following Kevin Costner's tumultuous departure.
However, there's every chance Taylor Sheridan can redeem himself with the upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs. An exciting trailer for Kayce Dutton's Y: Marshals was recently released, while The Dutton Ranch Beth and Rip spinoff has added Oscar-nominated actor Ed Harris to its cast. But it looks like the Yellowstone universe is about to face its stiffest competition yet with Netflix's The Abandons.
The Abandons Is Netflix's Next Big Western, And It's Coming December 4th

From Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, The Abandons is an epic-scale Netflix Western series, and it will premiere on the streaming platform this Thursday, December 4.
The Abandons trailer, which dropped earlier this month, depicts an embittered brewing feud between Lena Headey's Fiona Nolan and Gillian Anderson's Constance Van Ness. Taking place in 1850s Oregon, the religious Fiona finds her recently acquired land under threat as Constance seeks to take it from her.
Many fans of Sutter's motorcycle crime drama are wondering if The Abandons is secretly a Sons of Anarchy prequel, as the new show also stars Opie actor Ryan Hurst. Time will tell if that's true, but like SOA, The Abandons also centers on a bloody, lawless battle for power and control — a premise also very likely to appeal to Yellowstone fans.
Why The Abandons Is Perfect For Yellowstone Fans (Especially The Prequels)

To John Dutton, nothing is more important than his precious land, and the Dutton family fought tooth and nail to defend it. But this fight didn't start with the Kevin Costner character, as fans of the Yellowstone prequels know. Two prequel series have been released thus far, 1883 and 1923, with the former depicting the generation of Duttons who established the Yellowstone Ranch.
Western characters employing frontier justice to protect and preserve what they believe is rightfully theirs is the entire heart of the Yellowstone franchise, so those who enjoyed rooting for John and the rest of the Duttons will surely turn into the highly anticipated Taylor Sheridan rival, too.
Beyond that, fans who prefer the prequels to the original neo-Western show will likely appreciate the era in which The Abandons is set, which is between 1883 and 1923. Also similar to the Yellowstone franchise, which has seen A-list actors headlining its main TV show casts, The Abandons boasts two television heavyweights in Game of Thrones' Lena Headey and The X-Files' Gillian Anderson.
Interestingly, Sheridan's first big break was as an actor in Kurt Sutter's Sons of Anarchy. Sheridan played the morally upstanding Deputy Chief David Hale, though the Yellowstone creator left SOA reportedly due to salary disputes and being underappreciated. Perhaps Sutter is seeking to beat Sheridan at his own game, and by the looks of The Abandons, it certainly appears possible.
