Give me a lighthearted recap
2025 has been an absolutely incredible year in gaming, and with huge RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, PlayStation 5 originals like Ghost of Yotei, blockbuster shooters like Battlefield 6 or ARC Raiders, and indie sensations like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Blue Prince, it's easy to forget that the year also had its share of flops.
Unquestionably the biggest disaster in gaming of 2025 was the launch of developer Build a Rocket Boy's MindsEye, a game that was almost unanimously reviewed as one of the worst games of the year. Its controversial launch and scathing reviews prevented many players from purchasing MindsEye.
But in a surprise update (via PushSquare), PlayStation 5 users can try out the "MindsEye Starter Pack" demo for free—and it includes a ton of content that will be updated on a rolling basis.
PlayStation 5 Gamers Can Get A MindsEye Starter Pack
MindsEye is still an ongoing project that will continue to get new content, despite reviews and controversies surrounding its launch. The new MindsEye Free Starter Pack on PlayStation 5 is an attempt to allow players to experience what MindsEye has to offer without coughing up the full price first.
The MindsEye Free Starter Pack is essentially a free trial version of the game, but according to its PlayStation Store description, will get new content on a rolling basis in order to give players a look at the game's improvements over time. In the current version of the Starter Pack, players will get access to the following content, courtesy ResetEra:
- Robin Hood – Campaign Mission
- Garden Party – Drone Race
- Chase The Sun – Drone Race
- Honor Among Thieves
- Downtown - Goin' Haywire
- Crosstown Traffic – Checkpoint Race
- Rude Interruption
- Turbulence - Race
- Free Bird – Sky Race
- Winging It – Checkpoint Race
- Craz-Eye Taxi – Checkpoint Race
- Friendly Fire
- Cruise Control – Sky Race
- Fractured Echo – Survival Horde
- Road To Hell – Race
MindsEye Had A... Troubled Launch
MindsEye stumbled out of the gate (to put it lightly), quickly becoming one of 2025’s most notorious launch failures. Players reported constant crashes, unstable performance, and glaring bugs that made core missions impossible to complete. Early impressions criticized its bland story, loose controls, and lack of polish.
Community frustration fueled widespread refund requests and cancellations from streamers. Behind the scenes, layoffs and accusations that the project had suffered from poor planning and overwhelming developer pressure mounted, adding to the already heaping pile of controversy around MindsEye.
While all of that doesn't bode well for the game, and it will likely never remove the stink of its initial launch, MindsEye is nothing if not resilient, and Build a Rocket Boy studios is hopeful that the PlayStation 5 free starter pack will bring in a new wave of players.
