Cameron's support clearly goes a long way in the business, because not only did Worthington bag the role in Terminator Salvation, he was also cast as the lead in the fantasy film Clash of the Titans, which, ironically, was criticized for cashing in on a trend started by Worthington's own Avatar. Despite poor reviews, Clash of the Titans was successful enough to spawn a sequel, Wrath of the Titans, which is heading to a new streaming home in December.
Released in 2012, the movie was directed by Jonathan Liebesman, who replaced the first film's Louis Leterrier. While Clash of the Titans grossed nearly $500 million worldwide against a reported budget of $125 million, Wrath of the Titans wasn't as commercially successful. The movie barely crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, against a reported budget of $150 million. Wrath of the Titans holds a 26% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Its 3D effects are an improvement over its predecessor's, but in nearly every other respect, Wrath of the Titans fails to improve upon the stilted acting, wooden dialogue, and chaos-driven plot of the franchise's first installment." Two years earlier, Clash of the Titans had received criticism for its hastily retrofitted 3D, which was imposed only because Avatar convinced the industry that 3D was the fad to get behind.
Sam Worthington Returns as Jake Sully in 'Avatar 3'
By the time Wrath of the Titans was set to roll, Worthington had also experienced major mainstream success. He admitted that he let himself go before reporting to set, and showed up with a "dad-bod" on day one, angering the studio and the director. In an interview, Worthington said, "My arrogance clashed with the studio and the director's vision, and it turned into a horrible fight." The actor will reprise his role as Jake Sully in the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment of Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi franchise.
You can watch Wrath of the Titans on Prime Video beginning December 30. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
