If you're a fan of Minecraft, you've likely been following the development of sandbox RPG and Minecraft-inspired crafting game, Hytale, over the past few years. Hytale has been through the wringer, with Riot Games canceling the project only for it to be revived again its original developers in a rare industry deal.

After years of hardship, however, you will finally be able to play Hytale when it releases to early access on Tuesday, January 13. While it's going to launch in a somewhat crude state, according to developers, Minecraft fans may finally have something better on the way.

Hytale Early Access Begins January 13

Hytale is an upcoming sandbox adventure from Hypixel Studios that builds on the creative spirit of Minecraft, reflecting its block-based worlds and open exploration while also incorporating RPG elements and creative modes. It was miraculously brought back from the dead in a rare deal between Riot Games and Hypixel Studios to repurchase the original engine.

Hytale attempts to push sandbox gaming further by functioning not just as a game but as an engine, giving players powerful creation tools, robust modding capabilities, and flexible scripting systems. This allows users to craft their own worlds, stories, and game modes, making Hytale a platform for experimentation and community-driven innovation.

Early access for Hytale will focus on polishing its "core systems," which includes refining "exploration, responsive combat, and robust building," as well as "creator‑first tools for making your own content, crafting mini-games, and running community servers."

Developers insist that players temper their expectations for early access, and while they're working to improve things as fast as possible, "this is true early access, meaning it’s still very much unfinished and will be buggy for a while."

Say Goodbye To Minecraft

Despite developers at Hypixel Studios claiming "the first impression will be rough," players will be keen to see for themselves just what Hytale has to offer. Gameplay footage looks extremely promising for an unpolished game, but more exciting is the fact that "modding and creative tools are in a decent state" and players will be able to "create content on day 1."

This means we're likely to see a wave of Hytale mini-games, community servers, and fan-crafted projects popping up throughout 2026, not to mention major improvements driven by community involvement. Things have turned around quickly for Hytale fans, and in just a few weeks, they've gone from thinking the game was never happening to getting an official early access announcement.
