While the movie opened to mostly positive critical reception, it received a particularly nasty response from audiences. Starring Jessie Buckley as a young woman who takes up residence in a countryside home on vacation, the film debuted theatrically in 2022, and also featured Rory Kinnear in several supporting roles. The movie follows the protagonist as she is hounded by strange men in the village, all of whom are played by Kinnear. If this sounds intriguing to you, then you might want to check Men out on the Tubi streaming service, which is where it's heading this December.
Men managed to gross only around $11 million in its theatrical run, which is far lower than anything Garland had experienced so far in his directorial career. He'd previously made the acclaimed sci-fi movies Ex Machina (which is also coming to Tubi) and Annihilation (which is heading to Paramount+). He went on to direct the dystopian thriller Civil War, and the gritty war drama Warfare, both for A24. Garland's creative collaboration with the studio will continue with his most ambitious project yet, the video game adaptation of Elden Ring.
'Men' Didn't Resonate With Audiences
Men currently holds a 69% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "If its narrative and thematic reach sometimes exceeds its grasp, magnetic performances from a stellar cast help Men make the most of its horror provocations." However, the film's audience score is languishing at a rough 40% score on RT; the audience's consensus on the website reads, "Men might satisfy film fans comfortable with a lot of ambiguity and heavy symbolism, but for many others, it'll be hard to see the point." The movie also earned a dreadful D+ grade from opening day crowds, according to the polling platform CinemaScore.
Buckley, of course, has established herself as one of the most exciting young stars of her generation, with roles in The Lost Daughter, Women Talking, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. She'll probably level up massively in the coming months, with back-to-back roles in Hamnet and The Bride!.
You can watch Men on Tubi beginning December 1, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
