The Oklahoma Sooners made one final statement in the 2025 regular season with a gutsy 17-13 win over the LSU Tigers on Saturday. The Sooners moved to 10-2 with the win, and by most accounts, earned a berth in the College Football Playoff.
Oklahoma ranked No. 8 in each of the last two playoff rankings, keeping them right where they need to be to secure a spot in the 12-team bracket. However, the decision is out of Oklahoma's hands. When asked after the game if Brent Venables thought the Sooners had done enough to host a first-round playoff game, Venables simply said Oklahoma will be ready regardless of their seeding.

I’ve spent no time looking at that. I don’t know. They’re not listening to me. There’s plenty of things to look at for them to make the decisions that they make. I’m sure it’s not easy. Wherever they ask us to play, we’ll show up."
Venables believes his squad has done enough on the football field to warrant a spot in the playoff. While other coaches are lobbying for a spot, the Sooners lobbied with their play. They went 4-0 in November, earned a trio of ranked wins, and positioned themselves as one of the best defensive football teams in college football.
The Sooners may not have earned style points with their win over the LSU Tigers, but they did the only thing that matters. They won. And when it comes down to it, that's all that should matter to the College Football Playoff committee. The Sooners have done more than enough.
