There is no denying that Gilmore Girls has become synonymous with fall. The beloved series about the hilarious mother-daughter duo and their quirky small town is now 25 years old, but fans always seem to return to it when the weather gets cold, and it's no wonder. While there's something innately comforting about the clever, fast-moving series, Gilmore Girls isn't the only series that has the appropriately cozy vibes for this time of year.
Anne with an E is a Canadian series created for CBC and Netflix in 2017. With Amybeth McNulty as the title character, it loosely adapts Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables, featuring a charming coming-of-age story with an imaginative and often impulsive protagonist. What makes Anne with an E the perfect show for the season is the loving, warm characters and feel-good story as Anne finds her place in the world. Whether you need something fresh or just finished Gilmore Girls too early this year, Anne with an E is the perfect addition to your fall watchlist.
What Is 'Anne with an E' About?
Much like the classic children's book, Anne of Green Gables, the series is set in the late 19th century and follows the orphaned Anne Shirley, who is sent to live with the elderly Cuthbert siblings and help with their farm. However, the imaginative, headstrong girl with a talent for getting into trouble is not who Marilla (Geraldine James) and Matthew (R. H. Thomson) expected. They planned to adopt a boy who could help Matthew on the farm, but the talkative thirteen-year-old quickly worms her way into their hearts. Through these unlikely events, Anne finds the loving family she has always wanted, though Marilla and Matthew aren't exactly prepared to raise a child. Anne serves as an endearing heroine as she livens up the Cuthberts' home. While she and the Cuthberts get off to a rough start, they become deeply attached to each other, giving Anne with an E a heartwarming story of familial love.
Yet, even while Anne finds a loving family, she faces other challenges. Anne with an E forces the heroine to contend with her trauma. Not only has Anne lost her parents, but she also grew up being sent from one terrible situation to the next, getting beaten and bullied. These traumatic memories are triggered from time to time, adding darker themes to the story. Meanwhile, she struggles to gain acceptance within the community. Anne's past and the unique way she expresses herself immediately set her apart, and many people in the town of Anvonlea dislike her. The situation is made worse by Anne's temper and competitiveness, but through it all, Anne remains herself as she tries to win over her new neighbors in a coming-of-age story. As the heart of the show, Anne is a flawed and endearing individual as she searches for acceptance within her adoptive family and her community.

While many things tie a series to a particular season, for Fall, especially, a large part of it is visual. Much like Gilmore Girls, which has its fair share of autumnal-looking episodes due to its New England setting, Anne with an E takes place on Prince Edward Island, which provides the series with a picturesque fall landscape. Throughout the series, there is no shortage of beautiful colors that are associated with the season. Even though the series is not exclusively set in fall, it certainly fits the autumnal aesthetic, making it the perfect choice to get in the right mood as the leaves begin to change.
The series does everything it can to invoke fall. Not only does it include the visuals necessary to remind viewers of this time of year, but Anne with an E also takes place in a small town, further recommending it as a seasonal rewatch. This kind of community is a staple of fall favorites because the quaint town and close-knit society create the cozy feeling that is associated with the season. Anne with an E's Avonlea is that, as the series shows Anne becoming a part of the close-knit community despite early obstacles. Every element of the setting infuses Anne with an E with a fall aesthetic, making it an ideal choice for the season.
The Characters Make 'Anne with an E' Warm and Inviting

While the setting does a lot to make Anne with an E feel like fall, what sends it over the edge is the warm ensemble and cheerful story. It all starts with the main character, as Anne's enthusiasm and wistfulness make every episode cozy and perfect for fall viewing. Her exuberance and awe of life make her instantly lovable, endearing the audience to her quickly. She remains optimistic and sincere throughout the story, pulling the characters around her and the audience into her orbit.
Anne's relationships add an unbeatable level of comfort to Anne with an E. She is a dedicated and loyal friend to many, but this is best seen in the dynamic between Anne and Matthew. Matthew may be quiet and reserved in a dramatic contrast to Anne, but his unwavering love for his adoptive daughter brings tears to the eyes. It is this storyline that makes Anne with an E the feel-good series perfect for fall. Though there are some dark elements as the series delves into Anne's past, Anne with an E is ultimately a heartwarming, happy story because it's about how she moves past her trauma as she finds herself as the newest member of an unlikely family, and her beautiful dynamic with Matthew and Marilla inspires the warm feeling that every good fall show needs.
Anne with an E is streaming on Netflix in the U.S.
