By Andrew RavensShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberFollowing the conclusion of WWE 'Survivor Series: WarGames', the creative direction for the main event of 'WrestleMania 42' has reportedly come into sharp focus. The chaotic finish to the Men’s WarGames match, which served as the Premium Live Event's main event, has set the stage for the top matches at the biggest show of the year.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the current plan for the two world title matches at 'WrestleMania 42' are Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes versus Roman Reigns III and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk versus Bron Breakker. The booking of the WarGames match and the post-match interactions were explicitly designed to set up these directions.
The closing moments of the show saw Bron Breakker pin World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk to win the match for his team. Post-match, Roman Reigns told his teammate Cody Rhodes that it was the last time they would ever team together, signaling a renewed rivalry between the two stars. Meltzer noted that the show's conclusion was precisely designed to reveal the 'WrestleMania' card to the audience.

The decision to feature a third encounter between Rhodes and Reigns was questioned by Bryan Alvarez on the podcast due to the two stars having worked at 'WrestleMania' twice before. However, Meltzer confirmed that this is the direction WWE is heading, framing the match as a rubber match.
Triple H had nothing but praise for Roman Reigns during the post-show press conference, despite the babyface team suffering a loss in the Men’s WarGames Match. Reigns finished the night under the spotlight after sharing an intense staredown with both CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.
...With Bron Breakker pinning World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, and Roman Reigns setting the stage for a third WrestleMania clash with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, the top two title matches for 'WrestleMania 42' appear set. This marks a shift from the original plan of Reigns vs. Seth Rollins.
Cody Rhodes is in his second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion, having defeated John Cena at 'SummerSlam'. Meanwhile, CM Punk is in his second reign as World Heavyweight Champion, having won the vacant title on November 1, 2025.
