It’s Selection Sunday For Marquette Volleyball!

I don’t feel comfortable about the Golden Eagles getting into the field of 68, but maybe I should?

Marquette volleyball wrapped up their 27 match schedule over a week ago, and tonight, their restless wait to see if their season continues comes to an end.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up their end of the first Big East tournament under the direction of head coach Tom Mendoza with a 3-0 sweep against #12 ranked and top seeded Creighton in the semifinals on November 22nd. For whatever reason, the Big East brain trust moved the conference tournament back a week from its traditional standing spot on Thanksgiving weekend, so Marquette has sat idle since that loss, waiting to find out if the NCAA selection committee will put them into the field of 68 as an at-large bid.

Here’s what Marquette’s selection profile looks like as of Saturday afternoon:

Record: 17-10RPI: #34 (through matches played on 11/23)Evollve Ranking: #43

Record vs RPI 1-25: 1-6vs RPI 26-50: 4-2vs RPI 51-100: 1-1vs RPI 101+: 11-1

Last year, the doubt in my head about Marquette’s entry to the field had to do with their 1-7 record against top 25 opponents. The Golden Eagles were 23-8, but with seven losses against the nation’s elite and a 21-1 record against sub-50 opponents, I thought that maaaaybe there was some doubt about what would happen, even with an RPI of #17.

And then the committee made Marquette a #5 seed in their region. I was WAY off.

And that brings me around to the bracketology that ESPN’s Charlie Creme published back on November 26th. My doubt level on the Golden Eagles is obviously much higher than it was last year because now they have a sub-100 loss on top of that shaky record against elite teams, AND three more losses in between #26 and #100. You see my point at least, right?

Yeah, so Creme has Marquette as a #7 seed.

The last #7 seed, to be clear, trailing Penn State, Florida, and Northern Iowa, but still right there. Those three teams in the RPI? #31, #36, and #26. You know what, I can’t argue the point, I guess.

The NCAA’s Michella Chester is slightly less high on Marquette, but she still has the Golden Eagles in the field, just unseeded as of November 27th. She has Villanova in as well and Xavier in as a #8 seed, so that would be good news for Marquette there as well, I think.

There’s a volleyball bracketology Instagram account, and as of November 23rd, they had the Golden Eagles as a #8 seed.

This seems to indicate that I shouldn’t spend all day Sunday being nervous about Mendoza’s first Marquette team being the first MU team to miss a full field NCAA tournament since 2010. I probably won’t listen to that part of my brain until I hear someone on ESPN say “Marquette” on Sunday night, though.
