Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano has been tagged several times in his career as someone who can occasionally lose focus or suffer a lapse in concentration.

The Frenchman did not dispute that, but did acknowledge that he has gotten better with those things as he has matured.

“Today, there’s more maturity in my game. I’m a center-back, so I have to be more vocal. The lapses in concentration I experienced in the past are behind me. I feel I have better control of my emotions. It’s showing match after match. Sometimes there are duels that aren’t worth taking. Why dive in? Risk getting a card? I try to control myself,” Upamecano told L’Equipe (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

There has been a downtick in Upamecano’s lapses this season for sure, but that also could be helped by the presence of Jonathan Tah, who can absorb some of the vocal responsibilities of the position and is known for constantly talk on the pitch to his center-back partners.

Whatever the case, the end result is that this is as good as Upamecano has played during his career — and Bayern Munich fans totally welcome that.
