The Spartans dominated early on but needed to hold on late for their first conference win of the year to beat Maryland on Saturday night. Michigan State beat Maryland by the final score of 38-28 from Ford Field in Detroit, Mich.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementMichigan State dominated the first half, building up a three-score lead heading into the break. Spartans quarterback Alessio Milivojevic threw for three first half touchdowns, including one in the final seconds to Jack Velling to push Michigan State's lead to 24-7 at halftime.
Things started to flip in the second half, with Maryland taking control in the third quarter. The Terps were able to outscore Michigan State 21-7 in the third quarter, with the lone score from the Spartans coming on a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Alante Brown.
The game was ultimately won by the Spartans in the final minutes of the game, when Milivojevic was able to connect with Omari Kelly on fourth down for a touchdown. That score pushed the Spartans' lead to double-digits, and sealed the victory
With the win, Michigan State finishes the year 4-8 overall and 1-8 in Big Ten games. This win over Maryland snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Spartans. Now, the focus will turn to whether or not head coach Jonathan Smith will return or if Michigan State will move on with a new coach. We should know the future of Smith in the next day or two.
