Alabama will look to continue its reign of terror in the Iron Bowl this Saturday when it makes the trip to Auburn for a regular-season finale that will decide its SEC Championship prospects. However, this fixture of all has displayed a propensity for theatrics, meaning the 5-6 Tigers shouldn’t be ruled out of bowl contention just yet.
Auburn hasn’t managed a win of any kind over the 9-2 Crimson Tide since its famous back-and-forth victory in the 2019 edition of this matchup. Fast forward to today, and the Tigers are once again in the hunt for an upset win that could also dash their greatest rival’s playoff chances at the death.
A fortnight has passed since Alabama suffered the only SEC defeat of its season thus far, falling flat in the end against Oklahoma. The Tide has since restored some morale following a 56-0 dismantling of Eastern Illinois last time out, while Auburn is on a similar trajectory after responding to its two recent conference losses with a big win over Mercer.
Interim head coach DJ Durkin can write his name in the Auburn history books with a win against the odds here, having replaced the fired Hugh Freeze after nine games. However, Ty Simpson will dictate whether that’s the case as he aims to get the most out of an Alabama offense that hasn’t been quite the same on the road this year.
