Kenneth Branagh has given us many memorable characters, but his portrayal of Hercule Poirot is perhaps the best. The actor-director has made three movies based on Agatha Christie novels, which were moderately well-received by fans and critics alike. His versions of the classic stories are visually rich, thrilling, and keep the audience glued to their seats. As the holiday season approaches, two movies in the franchise have found a new home to entertain the fans of the detective genre and the celebrated author.
Death on the Nile and follow-up A Haunting in Venice are dropping on Prime Video this December. The movies have an ensemble cast, a delicious mystery at the heart, and Hercule Poirot’s antics. The franchise started with Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Branagh from a screenplay by Michael Green, which was a commercial success. It led to the second film, Death on the Nile, a crisp whodunit, with an ensemble including Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening, Sophie Okonedo, and Russell Brand, among others.
A lavish cruise trip on the Nile, celebrating a newlywed couple, quickly turns into a murder mystery of the bride. Hercule Poirot uncovers a complex web of jealousy and betrayal among the passengers to find the killer. The movie has a 62% Rotten Tomatoes Rating from critics and an 82% rating from the audience. While Death on the Nile grossed $137.3 million at the box office, proving a commercial success, it was also criticized for its pacing and excessive CGI depicting 1930s Egypt. Branagh followed up with the third movie in the franchise, A Haunting in Venice.
What’s 'A Haunting in Venice' About?
Based on Christie's Hallowe'en Party, the third installment, written by Green and directed by Branagh, had a supernatural touch. It finds self-exiled, retired Poirot living in Venice. Things take a turn when he’s persuaded by a friend to attend a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. He gets thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets when one of the guests is murdered. A Haunting in Venice is widely considered the best in the trilogy for its impressive visuals, stylish direction, and strong ensemble performances.
The Rotten Tomatoes rating of the movie further establishes the fans and critics’ preference as both gave it a 76 percent rating, the highest in the trilogy. The movie cast Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Michelle Yeoh, Kelly Reilly, Emma Laird among others.
Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice come to Prime Video on December 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
