The movie was based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, and featured a star-studded cast that also included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Chastain, and more. But the majority of the movie was powered purely by Damon's star-wattage. The Martian wasn't just a box office hit, it was also a major success during the awards season, going on to earn a nomination in the Best Picture category. While the movie has only grown in stature over the years, there's always going to be a generation that hasn't experienced its bombastic thrills. And that generation is in luck, because the movie is heading to Peacock in December.
Released in 2015, The Martian grossed $630 million worldwide against a reported budget of nearly $110 million. The movie was only eclipsed on Damon's resume by Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, in which he played a memorable supporting role. Oppenheimer grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide in 2023, and will likely be overtaken by Nolan's next film, The Odyssey, which features Damon in the lead role alongside an A-list supporting cast. The Martian earned excellent reviews, and is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 91% score on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Smart, thrilling, and surprisingly funny, The Martian offers a faithful adaptation of the bestselling book that brings out the best in leading man Matt Damon and director Ridley Scott."
Ridley Scott Is Sticking To Sci-Fi
The movie follows a stranded astronaut's efforts to survive on Mars while his colleagues on Earth put together a rescue mission. A spiritual successor, Project Hail Mary, is set to be released next year. Also based on a book by Weir, the movie stars Ryan Gosling, and marks the first feature film from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in over a decade. The script for the movie was written by Drew Goddard, who earned an Oscar nomination for writing The Martian. Scott's last movie was Gladiator II, and he's now putting together The Dog Stars, a science-fiction film starring Jacob Elordi.
You can watch The Martian on Peacock beginning December 1, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
