Fantasy TV has been on the rise, over recent years, with new series of all kinds popping up, but Netflix's The Witcher, which recently released its fourth season, set itself apart from the masses by following Geralt (Henry Cavill, and later, Liam Hemsworth), who is not a powerful political player or the fullfilment of a prophecy, but a monster hunter. With this, The Witcher brought a new subgenre of fantasy to the mainstream, but it certainly was not the first example of this kind of story. When The Witcher premiered in 2019, The CW already had a scrappier, pulpy version of that concept on air.
The Outpost may not have reached the same level of popularity as The Witcher, but it has a similar premise and a dark fantasy aesthetic. Throughout its four seasons, the series follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of her race, who discovers that she has extraordinary and uncontrolled powers. With plenty of lore and an old-school, monster-of-the-week format, this hidden fantasy gem is the perfect binge watch for lovers of the genre who have burned through all the usual suspects, and now that The Outpost is streaming for free on Tubi, it is the perfect time to dive into the world.
'The Outpost' Scratches the Same Monster-Hunter, Dark-Fantasy Itch as 'The Witcher'
While there are many fantasy TV shows out there, The Outpost fills the void left after you catch up on The Witcher because they each center on a hardened warrior navigating the dangers of the world. Like Geralt, Talon must deal with terrifying monsters, magical enemies, and political scheming while solidifying her moral stance. Talon and Geralt may not be the same character, but they have similar emotional journeys and therefore appeal to many of the same fans. Beyond the main characters, The Outpost and The Witcher fill the same dark fantasy space, developing unique mythologies within the stories. While The Witcher addresses the corrupt society of mages and the divide between men and elves, The Outpost explores ancient races and dark powers. These complex worlds both come to light through a similar formula as the lead travels to a new place to fight a monster, only to uncover a deeper conspiracy, meaning The Witcher's audience will feel right at home with The Outpost's storytelling.
The two shows certainly have their differences, and chief among them is the fact that The Outpost doesn't have the same budget. The series leans into the old-school syndicated TV feel, using alternatives to the streamer's horrifying special effect monsters. The Outpost even uses monster-of-the-week threats, which made sense for its weekly release, while The Witcher was always intended for binge-watching. These traits can make The Outpost campy at times, but The Witcher isn't completely devoid of that anyway. The structure of the series may be different, but there is certainly enough overlap to attract the same fans.

The Witcher isn't complete, but with Season 4 only recently released, fans have a long wait before the series returns with new content. However, The Outpost is a great way to fill the time. With four seasons of its own, the CW series isn't another one to get attached to only for it to end too early, nor is it overly bloated. At 10-13 episodes each season, The Outpost provides enough time with Talon and her companions to get the audience invested. Throughout the series, the fans watch as the ensemble cast's relationships shift and loyalties change, allowing the world to expand and capture their attention. While cutting off a series before it has time to grow is an issue, the opposite can also pose a problem. Many series go on too long, making them inaccessible for viewers who don't have the time to commit to a 10-season epic. The Outpost balances these concerns, hitting a perfect four-season arc that makes it a perfect binge-watch.
The Outpost may have come a year before The Witcher, but it isn't nearly as well-known. Having never broken into mainstream fantasy discourse, this series has become a rare discovery that fans can claim as their own underrated gem, even if they didn't find it until after it concluded. Especially now that the entire series is free to stream on Tubi, ifyou're missing The Witcher's sword fights, dark magic, and monstrous surprises, The Outpost is a fun, forgotten alternative.
The Outpost is streaming on Tubi in the U.S.
