The Digimon franchise is experiencing a bit of a renaissance at the moment. While video games like Digimon Story: Time Stranger have revitalized interest in the video game side, anime like Ghost Game have been met with critical acclaim. The anime's next entry, Digimon Beatbreak, had quite a bit of hype behind it, which is why it's so disappointing to see that hype completely fizzle upon release.
While there are a number of factors, such as pacing, that have hurt the new Digimon anime's critical reception, the one thing holding it back from the cultural ubiquity enjoyed by the franchise back in the heydays of Adventure is something the franchise has been dealing with for years.
Digimon Beatbreak's Biggest Mistake Is Its Lack Of a Dub
Digimon-Beatbreak-Key-Visual
Digimon Beatbreak premiered for American viewers on Crunchyroll in October, and it did so without an English dub.
While this is fairly typical for all but the biggest of anime premieres, what makes this particularly egregious for Digimon is who it's aimed at.
Though Digimon Beatbreak is a much darker take on the franchise, it is still a series primarily aimed at young adults, particularly those in the 10 to 14 age bracket. That doesn't mean that other groups can't or shouldn't enjoy it, just that the series is clearly aimed at a slightly younger audience.
In this light, the lack of a dub is confusing. By Crunchyroll's own admission, most viewers watch anime dubbed rather than subbed. This appears like it would be especially true for younger viewers who may want to focus on the series' impressive animation and action rather than on reading.
Digimon Beatbreak's Lack of a Dub is Far From Surprising
The cast of Digimon Ghost Game shocked.
Unfortunately, Digimon's last anime series, Ghost Game, also didn't receive an English-language dub upon release. That is only just recently being rectified, as an English dub is being released in the UK on December 1st.
While Ghost Game had more than a few fans and is generally looked back upon with fondness, it wasn't exactly a smash hit. It's possible that, with proper promotion and an English dub, Ghost Game could have been much bigger than it was.
Completely re-dubbing a series is expensive, of course, but Digimon is a legacy brand with wide appeal to both nostalgic Millennials and newer generations less familiar with the brand.
None of this is to suggest that Beatbreak, or even Ghost Game, are bad. Far from it. Digimon is in a great place at the moment, but it seems apparent that the franchise's anime series could be doing even better if new shows like Digimon Beatbreak premiered with dubs.
