Earlier this week, the movie slipped to the number three spot on the Netflix charts, losing the top spot to the holiday title Champagne Problems. According to FlixPatrol, Frankenstein was also beaten out by the animated movie In Your Dreams, which took the number two spot. Based on arguably the first-ever science-fiction story in history, Frankenstein is a major awards contender for Netflix, and the streamer's second movie with del Toro, who also directed a stop-motion Pinocchio adaptation a couple of years ago. That movie ended up winning a Best Animated Feature Oscar for the filmmaker, who'd previously won Best Picture and Best Director honors for The Shape of Water.
Frankenstein is headlined by Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, with Christoph Waltz and Mia Goth in supporting roles. Produced on a reported budget of $120 million, the movie opened to mostly positive reviews, with critics highlighting Elordi's performance as "The Creature," and del Toro's typical visual flair. Frankenstein holds a "certified fresh" 86% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Finding the humanity in one of cinema's most iconic monsters, Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is a lavish epic that gets its most invigorating volts from Jacob Elordi's standout performance." The audience score for the film is even higher, at a near-perfect 96%.
'Champagne Problems' Doesn't Yet Have a Rotten Tomatoes Score
Meanwhile, Champagne Problems falls squarely into the category of movies that Netflix rolls out at this time of the year. It combines both the romantic comedy and holiday themes that a certain demographic on Netflix seems to enjoy, and features Minka Kelly and Tom Wozniczka in the lead roles. Champagne Problems doesn't yet have an official Rotten Tomatoes score, although it received a positive review from Collider's Isabella Soares. She wrote that "this Netflix rom-com is poised to not only bring the jolly spirit back to full force but satisfy a craving for travel for those unable to plan a getaway abroad."
